Hiring An Electrician Safely During Lockdown

We all need peace of mind when letting people into our property at the best of times, but we need to be especially mindful during the current health crisis.  You may be wondering whether you can hire an electrician during lockdown.

As government guidance seems to be constantly changing, you’d be forgiven for not being sure who is allowed into your home or business, and who isn’t.

Can Electricians Still Work During Lockdown?

The UK Government has stated that tradespeople, including electricians, are able to continue working in homes and business during the second lockdown.

The specific guidance is that you may leave home for “work purposes, where your place of work remains open and where you cannot work from home (including if your job involves working in other people’s homes).”

Of course, it’s entirely up to you if you’re comfortable allowing tradespeople into your home during lockdown.  But as long as they, and you, have no COVID symptoms then, legally, there’s no issue with it.  However, there are some important precautions that you should take.

Precautions To Take When Hiring An Electrician During Lockdown

It’s important for all tradespeople to ensure that no one in your household or business has any COVID-19 symptoms or is in self isolation. Likewise, you should check that the electrician is symptom-free.

If anyone in your household has COVID, or is currently self-isolating, then you should postpone the work.

Social Distancing

Just as you would in any public setting at the moment, you should remain at least two metres away from other people.  This includes avoiding shaking hands with your electrician and offering them refreshments.

Your Electrician Should Practice Good Hygiene

Your electrician should wash their hands before, during, and after carrying out their work.  They should preferably dry their hands on their own personal towel.  For added safety, you might want to leave some anti-bacterial wipes or hand gel in the room they are working in.

They should ensure that all tools are thoroughly wiped down between jobs at different properties.

Expect PPE To Be Worn By Your Electrician During Lockdown

You are within your rights to insist that tradespeople working in your home wear PPE.  This is especially the case if they are likely to come within two metres of another person. They should safely dispose of any wipes, gloves and masks once they’ve finished the work.

Also, you can help to stop the spread of coronavirus in your home or business by opening windows.  This will ensure that the electrician’s work area is well ventilated.  Ideally, work should be signed for and paid for electronically, rather than cheques or cash.
